Kevlar bulletproof vest is a relatively new way to protect the body against bullets. The Kevlar is a kind of synthetic fabric that has properties very similar to those of steel. This material has an optimal strength-to-weight ratio – its strength is 5 times bigger than that of steel and their weight is approximately the same.
That is why this material is widely used in the production of bulletproof armor. It was firstly utilized in the beginning of the 1980ies for the protection of police and army. Kevlar was used not only in the bulletproof vests to protect the torso, but also in helmets to protect the head.
The best advantage about bulletproof vest is that it absorbs the impact of different projectiles made by fire weapon and of small fragments of explosives. Although Kevlar is not the newest and the most efficient bulletproof fabric, it is still used in the production of protective clothing and gets more advanced every year.
The new idea behind this production is to create bulletproof vests that wouldn’t contain any metal or ceramic plates – only the textile. Another material based on Kevlar has been developed in 1996. It’s called Protera and its bulletproof properties are a bit higher than those of Kevlar, however it is still impossible to make vests with it without additional armor plates.
