the best little mascara in texas »

It’s hard not to love Dolly Parton. True, she’s had some work done, but she’s still a tiny little firecracker with a perma-cheshire-cat-grin and a sweet yet powerful voice. Plus, she’s a pretty darn talented songwriter too (and we didn’t even mention her girls). So she’s got it all (and then some) and this country crooner is one busy lady of late: not only is she touring for her new album Backwoods Barbie, writing the score for the musical version of 9 to 5, working on an autobiographical musical, kids’ TV show as well as books and music for kids, she also wants her own cosmetics line, she tells Billboard magazine.

MAC, are you listening? I could so see her as a Viva Glam girl. Or, even better, how about a Dolly-themed capsule collection full of rhinestones and fringe that would make the Heatherette and Barbie collections seem staid. Funnily enough, the singer actually had a line of cosmetics for Revlon, marketed through infomercials, back in the early 90s. Guess it didn’t do so well. In the meantime, here’s a mascara I could picture Dolly using: Cargo’s Texas Lash – for lashes as big as Texas!

The end of spring is nearing and… »

I am in total love with this dress. I call it “vintage American Apparel.” I like the stripes and the colors so much - I’m glad I was able to get it for so cheap. We had an improptu photoshoot in the backyards with the doggies because the weather was nice and the sun was setting beautifully. I’ve accesorized incredibly simply here, just the shoes and the vintage necklace. Next time I’m goin to try to play it up so much more.

I hope you all don’t mind how the posting has slightly changed, it’s just that now that I have a photographer helping me sometimes, it takes time out of taking the pictures into putting it toward using photoshop to make them look better (so I finally get to use my photoshop skills!)

Product Review: Skin Like Butter Shea Oil Lotion »

Reviewer: Cinnamon Kitten

Brand: Skin Like Butter
Name: Shea Oil Lotion
Size: 8 oz.
Approx. Price: $10 USD

Scent Tried: Fresh Laundry

A few readers have told me that the only thing that keeps their skin soft and moisturized during the long winter months is Shea Butter and other products with Shea in it.

So I was keen to try Skin Like Butter’s Shea Products.

To Purr About:
- although it’s called a “oil lotion” this is a thick cream
- comes in a convenient pump
- it really does smell like fresh laundry (not my favourite scent to wear, but I have to give it points for being true to the promised fragrance)
- absorbs really quickly with no greasy after-feel
- good moisturization

Claws Out:
- scent is pretty strong, although this product does come in an unscented version
- although it leaves my skin well hydrated, it doesn’t leave it “silky soft”

Final Comments:
I was highly impressed with how well this cream moisturized my skin. It wasn’t oily or greasy at all, even with the “oil” in its name. Personally I would definitely opt for the Unfragranced one, but it’s something I would definitely reach for when my skin is feeling kind of dry.

Must-Have Mondays: Dior Diorshow Mascara »

I tend to be disappointed by cult beauty products. They just never seem to live up to the hype. With the exception of my recent fascination with Smith’s Rosebud Salve , my experience with the products everyone knows and loves just doesn’t seem to be as profound as theirs seem to be. But then I decided to try Dior Diorshow Mascara, and immediately my life changed. Yes, I know this verges on the dramatic. But seriously … this mascara is every bit worth the hype and excitement it’s garnered over the last year. Now, let me begin by saying that I am one of the followers of Maybelline Great Lash. Yes, I know not everyone loves it — in fact, many people despise it. But it’s always done the job for this beauty chick, so I haven’t felt the need to explore my other options. And plunking down $24 for a single tube of mascara seemed not only ridiculous but highly unlikely. But you know how it is … you’re browsing the many aisles at Sephora, and one by one the items start stacking up in your arms until you’re staggering under their weight, and then you think, “Well, what’s just one more product?” Such is how I found myself purchasing Diorshow Waterproof Mascara in Black 90 one recent Wednesday afternoon. I was enamored of the tube, which is quite substantial and holds a mega-wattage brush coated with the often-lusted-after formula. Could this really make me a believer?, I wondered as I began swiping the brush across my lashes. Well, let me tell you something — I immediately saw the value of this tube. It separated, it lengthened, it curled, it brushed … and best of all, I didn’t even need to comb out any excess or get rid of any clumps! It immediately adhered to my lashes and made them look so amazing in just one coat, my friend David (who was vacationing with me at the time) literally said “Wow!” I am now a true believer in the amazingness of Diorshow. While the waterproof version in black is my tube of choice, you can pick up Azure Blue or Chestnut on Sephora’s website for $24 each. A mascara that truly lives up to the hype? Well, that’s most definitely a must have.

Remedies For Puffy Eyes »

* Take a metal spoon and run it under cold water. Place the metal on the puffy area for at least 60 seconds.

* Apply hemorrhoid cream (look for brands that contain ingredients of yeast and shark’s liver oil) to the puffy area. Insiders have known for years that in just the way it gets the swelling out of that other area, it works the same way for the face.

* Thin cucumber slices used as compresses over closed eyes will relieve sore, puffy eyes.

* A black tea bag soaked in cold water on each eye for ten minutes will reduce swelling caused by fluid retention. Gently press from inner to outer corners to hasten drainage.

* Avoid salty foods, which cause the under eye area (and the rest of your body) to hold fluid.

* Elevate your head when you sleep, to keep fluid from settling around your eyes.

Tips To Cut Skin Care Product Costs »

It has often been said that quality has its price and your precious skin is not something you want to skimp on. So how do you get the very best products to meet your specific needs while spending the least amount possible?

First, you should realize that getting the care your skin needs is an investment in you - your health, your appearance and your self-confidence. But that is not to say you should spend huge amounts of money needlessly. By finding quality products that do exactly what you need them to do - no more and no less - you’ll be getting the best deal possible.

Choosing a skin care product that fits your needs perfectly is one of the best things you can do to cut costs. Once you find a few core items that work with your skin, you won’t need to keep searching and spending more money. And, the actual number of products you need can be quite low provided the ones you have work well for you.

When you find the skin care product that’s right for you, then it’s time to search for the best deal. There are a number of places online that offer the exact same products you’ll find in a department store but at a fraction of the price. Many of them offer free shipping and even send samples along with your order. You won’t miss out on anything except the crowds at the mall by ordering skincare treatments this way.

Aside from finding discounts, there are other ways to save on skin care needs. Here are just a few to consider:

1) Protect your skin from further damage and aging by avoiding overexposure to the sun. When you’re out, be sure to apply a quality sunscreen to all exposed areas.

2) If you smoke, quit. If you live with or spend a lot of time with smokers, encourage them to quit or limit your time around them while they are smoking. Cigarette smoke can cause damage to both your skin and your health, even if it is second-hand.

3) Drink plenty of water and cut down on caffeine and alcohol. You’ve heard it before - adequate water consumption keeps you hydrated and helps all systems in your body to function properly. If you’re not taking care of yourself, expect that to be reflected in your skin regardless of the products you use.

4) Get your beauty sleep. If you don’t believe rest has an impact on you skin, just go look in the mirror after a too-short night.

5) Don’t feel like you need to buy the latest and greatest. Products that have been around for awhile can still work well for you - that’s why they’re still around. Avoid getting caught up in the hype that always surrounds the introduction of a new wrinkle cream or firming serum. Stick to the basics.

Take steps to naturally prevent aging skin from getting out of control and supplement with quality products designed especially for your skin type. You’ll find everything you need at online skincare shops for a fraction of department store prices.
