Skin care for soft feet »

Hey, feet have skin, too! Feet can get very badly neglected so that they crack and scale. This is true especially in the summer time. Luckily, there is an easy, do it yourself technique to get them back in shape. The first step is to slather (preferably clean) feet with Vaseline. Any type of lotion can be used instead or in combination, but Vaseline works just fine. Second, wrap your feet with plastic. Plastic wrap or old grocery bags work well. The point is to keep the moisture in. After wrapping your feet, secure the wrap by putting socks over top. Then, just go to bed and let the healing begin. In the morning, improvement is obvious. A few weeks of repeated treatments can heal even deep cracks. With such low overhead it is worth a try!

Product Review: Eco Tools »

As the Glitterati comes crawling back… Sorry guys, I know it’s been ages. I hate when life gets in the way of blogging! If you’re still here, thanks for your patience and understanding!

Everyone’s going Green these days. From grocery stores to cosmetic companies, CEOs are getting the hint: caring about Mother Earth is cool, and it’ll also get you a cool chunk of change if you cash in on the trend.

Not to be overly cynical… there are many excellent companies out there who truly wish to minimize their ecological footprint. And if they make dependable, affordable products that are friendlier to the environment, why not buy from them?

Introducing: EcoTools . Launched just a couple of months ago, this company produces bath and beauty accessories made out of renewable & sustainable materials like bamboo, ramie , and recycled plastic. But concerns of the conscience aside, does using these nature-friendly materials result in a better product?

Well, I suppose it depends what you’re looking for. I had the chance recently to try the EcoTools line, and I must say that I’m pretty impressed*. The brushes are much softer than any other that I’ve tried in the drugs-store price range (and softer than some that are much pricier!). The large powder brush is especially lovely — it’s like sweeping your face with a kitten wearing feathers (minus the claws and the allergies). The “floppier” bristles leave just a perfect whisper of loose powder, invisibly setting your makeup. Great for applying all-over shimmer too.

Since the brush handles are made of light-weight bamboo, you might find that the balance / feel is a bit different than what you’re used to. But if you’re like me and schlepp your brushes (alll your brushes) everywhere with you, then the lighter load will be heartily welcomed.

Another clever product from the line is the Bamboo and Loofa Facial Buffs . Just dampen it and squirt your favourite cleanser on there… one side gently exfoliates your skin (it feels like a rougher face towel), and the other side is covered in terry cloth for cleansing. I leave one in my office drawer; it’s great to brighten those post all-nighter complexions. Much more convenient and much less waste than the disposable buffing pads.

And speaking of refreshing, but gentle exfoliation, I really like EcoTools’ Ramie Bath & Shower Mitt . Unlike its plasticky brethren, this bath mitt won’t rub you raw. It’s perfect for those… ahem, more delicate areas that you normally wouldn’t go near with an abrasive scrub or loofah.

So if you’re looking for brushes and accessories that are environmentally-friendly and wallet-friendly, do give Eco Tools a try. If you’re in the US, you can find the line at select Walgreens, K-Mart, and Ulta. Or, you check out their other goodies and place orders from the EcoTools website .

* Even before knowing the impossibly low prices… the largest powder brush is only $8!

What’s Your Friday Perfume? »

Happy Friday everyone! I’ll be continuing my Penhaligon’s sampling with Artemisia, with notes of nectarine, green foliage, green apple, lily of the valley, jasmine tea, violet, vanilla, oakmoss, sandalwood, musk, and amber. Lovely for spring, no? I plan to post about this and Malabah, so I’ll say no more. Shhh…..

What are you all planning to wear today? From the look of the weather forecast, spring is not being a cooperative season this year. Some of you are buried under snow, while we here in Atlanta are buried under pollen–for now. Early next week we are expecting highs in the low 50s and lows in the low 30s! I am sorry to sound like the Weather Channel, but this is unheard of! I’m so tired of my sweaters…I am ready to wear a skirt and sandals!

Skin Care - How to Get Rid of Oily Skin »

by Peter Sams

Oily skin is shiny, thick and dull colored. Usually a chronically oily skin has boorish pores and pimples and other embarrassing blemishes. In this type of skin, the oil producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is required.
Oil glands are more normally known as sebaceous glands. In clinical terms, the oil, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands, is known as sebum. These glands secrete oil in the face, neck, chest and others parts of the body. But the nose is the region which is greately affected as lots of oil is secreted and agglomerated here. The pores in this area are larger and the oil then flows to most part of the face.

The amount of oil which is produced depends upon individual to individual. During teenage years, because of the increase in the level of sex hormones known as androgens, the sebaceous glands make more oil as these androgens increase and actuate the sebaceous glands. The extra sebum which is produced is the main reason of inflammation and acne. Oily skin can be due to heredity or hormone levels.

Commonly teenagers are plagued with oily skin and acne breakouts. But sometimes-oily skin can continue way into adult years. With age the stream of sebum decreases and the skin becomes less oily. Humidity levels can also be a cause for excess oiliness on the skin.

Oily skin is differentiated by shine and enlarged pores. On account of the high levels of sebum, the skin has a greasy gloss and tendency to break out into acne. The reason is that oily skin tends to attract more dirt and dust. Oily skin care second step is moisturizing. Instead of oil, our skin contains water, that is very important to all the skin functions.

Oily skin can, and very normally is, dehydrated. That means lacking water and the first signs of dehydrated skin are very fine lines, which form wrinkles. Oily skin moisturizers are especially formulated to not block pores. There are also specialty creams for oily skin which deals with eliminating black heads and preventing blackheads from forming again. In oily skin care third step is nourishing. This is normally the role of the night cream. Even oily skin wants antiaging products, which are applied at night. Eye creams are used at night or in the morning. Masks are very important and can be a part of the oily skin solutions.

Oily Skin Care Tips

• Avoid using products on the face that add shine, like bronzers and shimmery blushes.

• Use oil-free cosmetics and products made for oily skin.

• A mixture of egg, camphor and skim milk powder can be take in action for oily skin.

• Avoid reapplying powder throughout the day. A build-up of powder and makeup can contribute to clogged pores and blemishes.

• Always remove your makeup before going to bed, but avoid cold creams and lotions, which may leave a greasy film on your skin.

• After applying makeup, brush the entire T-zone with a loose, translucent powder.

• Use an oil-free sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 when exposed to the sun.

• Lavender is also powerful regenerative oil, antibiotic, antiseptic, and promote the prevention of scarring.
